Sometimes I miss the USA

Where else in the world can you by crazy taste sensations like
'Pancake and sausage on a stick' with the choice of original, blueberry or choc-chip.

I loved Jimmy Dean sausages cooked the usual way when I lived in Houston, but never did I try this handy breakfast-on-the-run combo. You can even microwave it. Num num.

Almost a month...

...since my last post. I haven't fallen off the world although the last few weeks kinda felt like it. In a nut shell, here is what I have been up to:

The weekend after my last post, G and I went to the Isle of Wight with his parents for a lovely cycling trip. The weather has been really beautiful lately (still is). Caught the car ferry over with our bikes in tow. Drove to quaint BnB, picked up some bikes for the parents, had quick lunch, set off on our bikes and that is where things went belly up. Not more than 5 -10 mins after setting off we were cycling down a shady country lane (paved and downhill). There was a steep, small speed bump. I hit it, the bike stopped and I went over the handle bars, badly damaging myself and requiring an ambulance. I was a mess. A deep gash in my chin requiring 6 stitches, a fat lip, broken front tooth, grazing all down my face, and a right hand that swelled up like a tennis ball. Amazingly after x-rays of my face, chest and hand revealed no broken bones! All in all I was very luck I didn't break my neck frankly. Poor G had nightmares afterwards, he was cycling behind me and saw the whole event. No more cycling for me that weekend.

So the last few weeks I have been recovering. One benefit of my job is I can work from home and with the aching in my ribs and hand, that was a good thing. Although I think I scared my workmate when he dropped off my laptop and paperwork.

My mum arrived in the UK a week later. One weekend we spent in London with my mum. Again we were blessed with beautiful weather (mum had never experienced warm weather in the UK and I wasn't sure she believed me that it happens occasionally!). We visited Greenwich, the TATE (loved the comparison of Rothko and Turner) and the National Portrait Gallery (mmm Holbein...).

Last week I flew to Dubrovnik, Croatia for work. Managed to see a little and swim in the Adratic -oh the water is the clearest I have ever seen!! Crystal! The old town was cool and the food amazing. This meeting went a lot smoother that the last one. I think I am getting the hang of it, but it is still exhausting!

This weekend is the final with all the parents. We are off to Salisbury. One of my favourites.

Love is...

... coming home after a hard 10hr day (well actually more like 12hrs because I was up at 5am working before I left for work) to find your husband has:

- been to the shops and bought ingredients for dinner

- had already started and is currently cooking said dinner (which also happens to be your favourite mmm Masaman curry... smells are filling the air...)

- tells you not to snack on the left over mini Easter eggs because in the fridge is your favourite cheese (mmm garlic Boursin!!) and some crackers to go with while we wait for dinner to cook

- tells you to check in the fridge, to which you find two tubs of tasty tasty ice cream (apparently it was a two-for-one deal)

Oh and lots of warm hugs to go with.

First questions to ask?
- Are you ok?
- Are we ok?
- Are you softening some bad news?
- Did you get fired?
- What is this all about?

Reassuring answers:
- All fine
- All fine
- No bad news
- Not fired
- Because I love you (the best answer of all...)

The first of the two May long weekends

Monday, May 4, 2009
I have never wanted a long weekend so badly! I have just been so exhausted by work lately. There was no time this week to catch up on sleep from my work trip last weekend. In fact I was going backwards what with late nights and very early mornings. So yay for three days of sleeping in until 10am. It is a bit sad though. I just can't sleep in past 10am like I could in my Uni days (what is with that?) At least with the days getting longer we can feel less guilty about sleeping in and waisting the precious light (there is still light in the sky at 9pm!). There is still plenty of time to do things.

On Saturday, we went geocaching in Brighton. We only located one cache as there were too many Muggles around to find any more (yes that is the official term for those who have no idea about this secret world, quite HP-esque). Perhaps this weekend was not the smartest decision to go hunting especially on the first day of the Brighton Festival, a long weekend and a beautiful sunny one too. But we scoped out where the others may be located to come back during the week when it is much quieter.

Sunday was cleaning the house day. Quite over due and we have both G's parents and my mum coming to our part of the world in the next two weeks. Also took the time to sort out our clothes. Quite a nice collection off to charity. Summer tops came out of storage and some big winter things put away (not all, it is the UK after all...) We bought some Vacu-pack bags (as seen on TV!) where you seal your clothes in a bag, and use your vacuum to suck the air out making a smaller thing to store. Worked a treat.

Sunday night we went to a free fire-themed display in Brighton (part of the festival). There were floating flaming flowers on the pond, outdoor glass-blowing, strange mechanical moving sculptures and tall iron, brasier-like sculptures with cut out images (such as flowers or birds) visible due to the fire behind. A couple of these tall sculptures were being cut out with an oxytorch as we watched. The sparks looked like fire-rain. All very cool.

Today we went mountain bike riding through Firston Forest and found a couple more caches in Alfriston. It has been at least 5 weeks since I rode last. It was good to get out again and I need the practice for next weekend's Isle of Wight bike trip with G's parents. Yes, I fear the 70-year-old will be fitter than me. Sigh.

Lessons learnt

As a medical writer, I will be writing all sorts of things: newsletters, material for pharmaceutical companies, scientific reports and papers but mostly preparing (or at least editing) PowerPoint slide presentations for conferences and advisory boards. Last Thursday I flew to Madrid for my first work trip, a conference on a topic similar to what I used to work on in Sydney. It was good to be working in a familiar area again although I am loving the huge variety of therapy areas I now work with.

Overall my trip to Madrid went well and was a constant learning experience. It was interesting being behind the scenes. Over the years I have been to many conferences but never been on the organisation side of things. I love the quick thinking on your feet that is required when things don't go according to plan.

I was exhausted by the end but there were a few hours to wander around Madrid before heading to the airport. I had been missing out on some beautiful weather so I was glad I could soak up some sunshine. Final lesson: always pack some casual clothes and shoes. Walking five miles around the city in heals, after already having worked long hours in the stupid things, has wrecked my feet and I am in pain! The good side: Mr G actually told me to stay on the couch and watch TV today. He couldn't believe he uttered those words.

Camping at Easter: A fine tradition

Saturday, April 18, 2009
Whether the years of camping at Easter time subconsciously influenced us or maybe just the love of camping in general, this year Easter was spend camping and hiking on Dartmoor. We were nervous about the weather as the predictions weren't good. We had thought of abandoning the plan but with no other ideas coming to mind and realising most accommodation was booked out for Easter weeks ago, we decided to tough it out. As it turned out, we had beautiful sunny days. So much sun that we ended up quite sunburnt after the first day, with no hats or sunscreen and no way to obtain such things easily, we ventured on. I was very glad for my bandanna and my new sunnies from Switzerland (the only place I have been able to find Polaroid brand sunglasses other than Australia; I lost my Aussie Polaroids on the big bike trip in the Peak district last year :( ). So dressed up like a celebrity in hiding I tried to keep the sun off as much as possible.

For two days we hiked , climbed the tors and waded through the boggy bottom of Dartmoor, carrying everything we needed on our backs (defiantly not influenced by Festival then...). It was quite cold at night, hovering around zero but with thermals and very warm sleeping bags we were toasty. In the mornings there was crisp air, beautiful sunrises, frost on the ground and warm tea for drinking. Even though we packed for all weather conditions, knowing that things can turn for the worst rapidly out on the moors, we only wore our full wet weather gear for 1hr on the second night as the rain came right when we were cooking dinner. It had been threatening for a while. Looming grey clouds following us but politely holding back until we set up our tent and put our bags under cover.

Sunday was a change of pace and we headed back to the car after deciding to drive out to see Tintagel. I have always wanted to see that castle situated precariously on the edge of the island cliff. There was no sign of the short rainstorm we had the previous night. It was another beautiful day and the colour of the sky, grassy headlands and wild flowers of the Cornwall coast were very rich. We ate lunch on the hill opposite Tintagel. What a view with the waves crashing against the cliffs. It was all wonderful. Tintagel itself was blessedly not overrun by tourists and we were free to walk around the island. I loved the other ruins discovered on the island after a fire burnt the grasses and wind blew away the top soil revealing their hidden secrets. How wonderful that we are still learning about our ancestors and how that information reveals itself - I am a big fan of the show Time Team. I am loving the history in this country. Oh and we completely avoided all the tacky King Arthur, Merlin and crystal magic touristy shops -eek! Sunday night we drove back to Belstone, the town were we started our Dartmoor hike, and made our way to the site we camped on the first night. Free accommodation, so why not...

Monday we drove on the narrow country roads to Manaton. I was hoping we would pop by North Bovey - a small town near by that we visited last year that I loved due to all houses having thatched roofs - but, we ran out of time. At Manaton we walked to Becky Falls which were a recommended by G's dad. They were pretty but I still think the waterfall walk we did in the Brecon Beacons in Wales was far superior. As soon as the weather warms up a little more there will be more camping in Wales for sure! With Monday coming to an end we turned for home stopping along the way for a walk on Maiden Castle, the largest Iron Age hill fort in Britain. For those who have never heard of it, there is no Castle as such, just a lot of very large terraced earth ramparts. It is very impressive "about the size of 50 football pitches" with huge earth walls up to 6 meters high. There are a series of very large ditches at both of the large entrances meant to confuse the outsider. It was once home for 100s of inhabitants now it it is a peaceful place with local people jogging or walking their dogs and a large flock of sheep grazing with their lambs.

This weekend the plans are to:
- fix the house up
- get a new hair cut and style
- dinner tonight with Miss K to celebrate Snerg and Mez nuptials

Next week I am flying to Madrid for a conference. It is my first work trip of which there will be one a month. I have heard so many rumors that you fly to interesting places but they work you so hard that you don't get a chance to see anything. Boo to that!

It's a sunny day...

Have caught up on sleep after surviving my most hectic week at work yet. So many deadlines in too few days and too many jobs given to me with little notice ("sorry we forgot about this small thing but can you just squeeze it in and have it finished by tomorrow..." um no!). Funny how small things end up taking you all day and so you push aside the other million things you also need finished by tomorrow. But I figure I am still in the honeymoon phase of my new job and so still enjoy the challenge of an unpredictable, ever-changing environment. Ask me after a few more months...

Still on the topic of my job. I have successfully passed probation yay! I kinda figured I would as my work load has been steadily increasing and with the shortage of writers, they would be in trouble if they lost another one. The good news is I get a raise :)

I'm off to enjoy the slowly warming weather. The sun has been shining regularly but it has still been very cold out. Today is the first day we have opened all the windows for fresh air and not run to put more jumpers on.
